Most of the volunteer opportunities require a 40-hour training program. This 5 week, in-depth program covers the dynamics of domestic violence, teaches crisis counseling skills, and introduces the new volunteer to the responsibilities of the program that they have selected. No specific skills are required to be a volunteer. A strong desire and commitment to help victims of domestic violence and their children is an essential trait of a Women's Shelter Program volunteer. Crisis Intervention - Crisis intervention volunteers work hands on with the victims of domestic violence and their children. Duties of this position include: carrying a pager or cell phone to respond to incoming crisis calls after normal business hours or on weekends and holidays, actively listening to women in crisis, answering questions regarding Women's Shelter Program services and transporting victims to the shelter when required. A valid driver's license and current car insurance are required to participate in this volunteer program. Temporary Restraining Order Clinic - Legal secretaries, paralegals and attorneys assist in preparing the declarations and other legal forms required for filing a request for a temporary restraining order. Court escorts accompany women to the courthouse for the restraining order hearing. These volunteers offer support for the women who may normally attend these hearings alone. CHAT- CHAT stands for Child Abuse Treatment Program. CHAT volunteers provide transports for children who need to get to and from counseling. This volunteer opportunity may also include childcare at a counseling site. Our talented volunteers are an essential and very valued part of the Women's Shelter Program.
